چکیده

Measurements of radiation near the 670.8 nm atomic spectral line of Lithium as a 30 GeV electron beam propagates through a long, high density heat pipe oven (∼ 1 meter, neutral density ∼ 1015cm−3) have been performed. Practical considerations in the use of Cerenkov radiation as an automatically synchronized diagnostic of the plasma source properties are investigated. Parametric scans of the Cerenkov spatial profile (temperature, pressure, wavelength and laser/ebeam delay) are presented and the source neutral and plasma density are estimated from the measurements. Large increases in the number of intercepted photons are noted in the presence of plasma near strong spectral lines which depend on laser/e beam timing and steering.

Measurements of radiation near an atomic spectral line from the interaction of a 30 GeV electron beam and a long plasma.

Emissions produced or initiated by a 30-GeV electron beam propagating through a approximately 1-m long heat pipe oven containing neutral and partially ionized vapor have been measured near atomic spectral lines in a beam-plasma wakefield experiment. The Cerenkov spatial profile has been studied as a function of oven temperature and pressure, observation wavelength, and ionizing laser intensity ...

Positron Source from X-rays Emitted by Plasma Betatron Motion

A new method for generating positrons has been proposed that uses betatron X-rays emitted by an electron beam in a high-K plasma wiggler. The plasma wiggler is an ion column produced by the head of the beam when the peak beam density exceeds the plasma density. The radial electric field of the beam blows out the plasma electrons transversely, creating an ion column. The focusing electric field ...

Betatron Radiation from an Off-axis Electron Beam in the Plasma Wakefield Accelerator

In a plasma wakefield accelerator in the nonlinear regime the accelerated bunch electrons oscillate in a pure ion column. They emit strong synchrotron, also known as betatron radiation, in the keV to MeV photon range [1]. In previous experiments with a single electron bunch the oscillating electrons where distributed symmetrically about the beam axis or the ion column axis. However, with a driv...

X-ray Radiation and Electron Injection from Beam Envelope Oscillations in Plasma Wakefield Accelerator Experiments at Facet

Plasma wakefield accelerator experiments at FACET at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have shown a correlation between ionization-injected electrons and the betatron x-ray yield. Emittance spoiling foils were inserted into the beam and the x-ray yield, excess charge, and beam energy loss was measured. The excess charge and x-ray yield are attributed to the beam envelope oscillations whe...

DYNAMICS OF 28.5 GeV ELECTRON AND POSITRON BEAMS IN A METER-LONG PLASMA

A plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA) experiment is conducted at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The experiment aims at studying the issues relevant to a meter-long plasma accelerator module in the context of an actual high-energy collider. The transverse dynamics issues include transport and focusing of the beam. The longitudinal dynamics issues are the loss and gain of energy by the b...
